SkyClan
"It was clear that, no matter where SkyClan found its warriors, this was a well-trained and deeply loyal Clan." —Narrator on SkyClan in Ravenpaw's Farewell
Clan Information: The lake territory for SkyClan is called the Old River Bridge by Twolegs. Twoleg landmarks nearby include the Old Highway and Claw River. Landmarks here include:
- Camp: The camp is well protected by the valley between ShadowClan and ThunderClan, covered in thick, gorse underbush.
- Halfbridge: The halfbridge rests on the lake in their territory.
- Twoleg path: A road that runs through the center of the territory.
- Greenleaf Twolegplace: It lies at the tip of the the northern most part of the territory.
Overall Lifestyle: SkyClan was the fifth Clan, but was forced to leave the forest because Twolegs had invaded and taken over their territory, turning it into the Twolegplace cats see now. Their current leader at that time, Cloudstar, appealed to the other Clan leaders at a Gathering and asked for them each to give up some of their territory for SkyClan. However, each Clan gave reasons to refuse to let SkyClan stay,[6] and in the end, the Clan was driven out. Because of this, Cloudstar swore that SkyClan would never look to their warrior ancestors again. Cloudstar's mate, Birdflight, was offered a place in ThunderClan by Kestrelwing, the ThunderClan medicine cat with her kits, since she had just given birth to them and they were too young to make the journey to SkyClan's new home. ith much sorrow, Birdflight accepted and promised Cloudstar that they would someday meet again.
Later, SkyClan was brought back by Firestar in Firestar's Quest, a journey in which the ThunderClan leader, Firestar, and his mate, Sandstorm, traveled to the gorge to bring back the Clan.
The modern SkyClan is a Clan of cats with strongly built hind legs which allow them to jump great heights or distances inherited from their ancestors, ancient SkyClan. They have rough, hard gray pads which help them to jump and walk long distances on hard, rough surfaces without breaking skin, which makes them infected. This feature allows them to climb and hunt in the trees, hence the name SkyClan. They are very powerful cats, who are a bit like ThunderClan, eating mainly squirrels, mice, voles, and many kinds of birds.
Typical Personalities: Arrogant, curious, gullable
Typical Appearances: They seem to generate pelts of all colors and sizes, thought to be that most of their members were former kittypets and loners.
WindClan
"We are the closest Clan to StarClan, spiritually and physically, and we always know our warrior ancestors are watching over us. That is what makes us strong. No matter what trials we must endure, WindClan will last forever. " —Tallstar on WindClan in Secrets of the Clans
Clan Location: The lake territory for WindClan is called Hare Hill by Twolegs. The borders of the Clan have Twoleg names, such as the Hare Hill Riding Stables and Hare Hill road. Landmarks here include:
- Camp: A shallow scoop in the ground open to the sky.
- Moonpool stream: A stream marking WindClan's northern border, which is shared with ThunderClan, leads up to the Moonpool.
- Horseplace: he fence of Horseplace marks the Southern border of WindClan. Their heavy hooves make cats stay away from them.
- Lake shore: WindClan is located on the eastern shore of the lake.
A giant boulder resides in the center of the camp. This is called the Tallrock, where the leader makes his speeches. A gorse bush against the rock is the nursery. In another boulder is the medicine cat's den.[4] The leader, apprentices, warriors and the deputy sleep in the center underneath the sky. In bad weather, they retreat in burrows made by rabbits, foxes or badgers. There is also an old badger set where the elders sleep.
Valued Skills: Tunnelers, Moor runners, speed, and agility
Overall Lifestyle: WindClan cats are known for their love of open spaces. They are small and wiry compared to the other Clans. They live on open fields, or moorland, where they catch their main prey of hares and rabbits. Of all four Clans, they are the least used to wet ground, preferring the grassy ground of the moors, which they sleep on. They do not like to sleep in the shelter of dens because they prefer the fresh air. They are fiercely loyal and tough. They can also be nervous and quick to flee, due to lack of cover on the moor. In the old forest home, they took pride in being the closest Clan to the Moonstone, where the leaders and medicine cats went to share tongues with StarClan, and they often find themselves blessed to be the closest Clan to StarClan, both physically and spiritually since they do not live in an environment surrounded by trees or many shrubs that block their view of Silverpelt. They are considered the fastest of the Clan cats, and are considered to be the most quick witted amongst the other Clans. They are also the easiest to be offended and are the least likely to start battles between other Clans. The pelts of WindClan favor shades of gray and brown, perhaps as a natural outgrowth of the camouflage those colors provide. Of all the Clans, they have the deepest knowledge of Twolegs from seeing them on the farms that surround their territory.
Typical Personalities: Indecisive, intelligent, calm, patient
Typical Names: These names typically focus on the color of their pelts and sometimes the plants and animals within the moor.
Typical Appearances: Their appearances often consist of solids; from all shades of brown, gray, white, silver, and sometimes tortoiseshell.
ShadowClan
"Few are welcome here, in our world of secrets and darkness. We are a Clan of cunning and cleverness, a Clan well suited to the shadows of the cold north wind. No other Clan can walk the paths of night like we do. Other Clans may be faster or stronger, but we are the most dangerous warriors: fierce, proud, and independent. We are ruthlessly willing to do what it takes to protect our great Clan. There won't be any softhearted alliances here! ShadowClan will always be the dark heart of the forest." —Blackstar about ShadowClan in Secrets of the Clans
Clan Location: The ShadowClan lake territory is located in an area that Twolegs call the Sadler woods. The territory also includes Twoleg places such as the Hareview Campsite, the Sanctuary Cottage, and borders called Littlepine Road and the Littlepine Sailing Center. Landmarks in this territory include:
- Camp: Closer to Twolegs than in the old forest territory, but it is well hidden and difficult for attacking enemies.
- Twoleg nest: Home to two aggressive kittypets: Susan and Jacques (now the area is empty). If they catch Clan cats out alone, they attack immediately.
- Twoleg path: During greenleaf, Twolegs tramp along these paths all season.
- Greenleaf Twolegplace: Another place Twolegs inhabit during greenleaf. The Twolegs put up small dens and light terrifying fires. However, they also leave behind food much like the food found at the old Carrionplace.
The camp has a small pool nearby, so the cats don't have to go all the way to the bottom of the lake to fetch water for elders or the medicine cats. The actual camp is in a tangle of brambles, with low-hanging branches and boulders all around and above it. These brambles and branches help protect against badgers and other big creatures. Many trees surround the camp, enabling cats to climb up them and see the activities of the Twolegs on water. From these trees, the cats can see all the Twolegs and their water-monsters in the water. The entrance of the camp is through a thorn tunnel, and brambles. At the camp entrance is a large boulder, which cats have to slip past to enter the camp clearing. In the middle of the clearing grow ferns. There is a clear progression of dens from one side of the clearing to the other which are all in bramble thickets. The nursery is first, then the apprentices, then warriors, then the leader, and finally the elders at the end of the circle. This structure enables the kits and elders closest to the low-hanging branches and the warriors facing the entrance, if any kind of trouble. The medicine den is in a far corner, beyond the leader's den. It is a sandy, hollowed-out floor covered in dried pine needles. There, the branches are not so bunched together, letting the medicine cats examine the skies for omens. Above the leader's den, there is a hazel branch that hangs over. This serves as a kind of vantage point for the leader to address their Clan.
Valued Skills: Hunting and fighting in darkness
Overall Lifestyle: They are proud, loyal, defensive, and slightly arrogant; often seem to be misunderstood and portrayed by the other Clans as battle-hungry, aggressive, ambitious, and greedy for more territory. It was often said when the Clans were in the forest, that the cold north wind of the mountains chilled the ShadowClan warriors' hearts. However, as Rock states in Cats of the Clans, ShadowClan has the smallest amount of territory and prey, which may justify their willingness to add anything to the fresh-kill pile. Even though their fierce warriors and hostile leaders earned ShadowClan its reputation, the leader Dawnstar led Firestar to believe ShadowClan was not always as unfair and cruel as they seem now. Their main prey is reptiles and amphibians, such as lizards and frogs. A secret food source is the carrionplace, though they are careful not to eat crow-food. They also hunt rats from this area when prey is scarce. ShadowClan cats hunt best at night and are better than others at sneaking through undergrowth. In battle, ShadowClan cats use shadows as an advantage to fighting.
Typical Personalities: Uptight, arrogant, self-obssessed, very loyal
Typical Names: They use names that typical involve animals or the plants in their territory. Occassionally some are known to name their kits after past relatives.
Typical Appearance: They consist of very dark pelted cats; the colors being black, black bicolor, tortoiseshell, and dark tabbies.
ThunderClan
"Welcome to ThunderClan—the Clan of courage and loyalty. I was not a forest-born cat, but ThunderClan welcomed me, and once I proved myself as a warrior, they grew to respect me. I have risen to become their leader and I would lay down all my nine lives for my Clan, just as my Clanmates would lay down their lives for me and for each other. There is no Clan in the forest so true or so brave. I respect and admire the other Clans, but my heart is here, with ThunderClan- the Clan of heroes, the Clan of compassion, the Clan of destiny." —Firestar on ThunderClan in Secrets of the Clans
Clan Location: The lake territory for ThunderClan is called the Hare Hill Woods by Twolegs. Twoleg landmarks nearby include the Hareview Campsite, Abandoned Workman's House, Quarry Road, and the Quarry. Landmarks here include:
- Camp: The camp is well protected by the side of a cliff, and surrounded by a thorn barrier.
- Greenleaf Twolegplace: This part of land was given to ShadowClan until ThunderClan fought for it back.
- An abandoned Twoleg nest: Herbs and prey thrive here, though it has an ominous feeling inside.
- Sky Oak: An ancient oak where squirrels love to call home. It also has an old rabbit burrow inside. It‘s where ThunderClan apprentices practice their climbing skills.
- Old Thunderpath: Marked with blue Twoleg markers, cats often stay away from this road.
- The clearing: A training hollow much like the old sandy hollow in the forest territory.
- Lake shore: ThunderClan has the north-eastern portion of the lake.
At the bottom of an old cliff, this camp is very well protected. The walls around the camp are smooth, indicating Twolegs cut this place moons ago. The cliffs also help keep out the wind. A thorn barrier guards the camp; any cat that wants to come in has to get past. A ledge peeks out from the cliff. That is the Highledge where the leader speaks. A cave near the top is the leader's den. The apprentice's den is also a cave in the rocks while the warrior den is under a big thornbush. The medicine cat's den is another cave, but this time hidden by bramble tendrils. Like the previous camp, the nursery is highly guarded, and under a big bramble thicket reinforced with thick roots woven together for protection. Lastly, the elder's den is in a hazel bush, and later rebuilt under the boughs of a beech tree and reinforced with honeysuckle.
Valued Skills: Hunting and fighting in dense undergrowth
Overall Lifestyle: ThunderClan is a mainly peaceful Clan, and respectful of the other Clans as well. In battle, ThunderClan is fierce, courageous, and loyal. They are known to often take loners and kittypets into their Clan to either swell their ranks or because the cat is in need of help or shelter, although this did not happen much until Firestar became leader of ThunderClan. For this, they are at times looked down upon by other Clans and thought of as weak. The Clan's main prey are mice, voles, squirrels, and the occasional rabbit, as well as birds such as starlings, magpies, wood pigeons, blackbirds, and thrushes. They have excellent stalking techniques, creeping across the forest floor. They have the sense to keep upwind of their prey in the thick bushes. ThunderClan cats are noted to be especially strong. They are the only Clan to bunch their hindquarters before leaping to catch their prey.
Typical Personalities: Arrogant, considerate, stubborn, religious, loyal
Typical Appearances: They are normally large in size and muscle, somewhat similar to ShadowClan in stature and pelt colors. Their pelts tend to tend with the nature; brown, gray, tabby, and tortoiseshell tend to be their main colors however there is the white color of white.
